Each seminar can be structured as a short introductory seminar (1 week, 5 days), as a 2 weeks full seminar (10 days) or as a 4 weeks intensive seminar (20 days).
All seminars are oriented towards practitioners. They are not conceived as university seminars. The seminars will train experienced practitioners by experienced professionals: on an equal footing. Promoting discussion, exchange and networks at the same time as transmitting first hand knowledge of International Affairs is the key objective.
Seminars may also include a variety of international lecturers depending on the concrete structure of the seminar. Our network includes a wide range of experts and specialists on every given topic in International Affairs.

TRAINING CONTENTS

1. Introduction in International Affairs and Security Policy

Core elements of the seminar: participants will study the fundamentals of International Affairs and Security policy. This will include:

History of International Relations since 1945: what are the key drivers of International Politics?
Geography and demographics: how fundamental factors shape International Relations
The (modern) state and foreign policy: how international affairs are carried out
Current challenges in International Affairs (on a global as well as on regional levels)
International Organisations: their role and what they are doing today and why
Key players of International Relations: Who is who? A practical approach to International Relations
Main security challenges after the Cold War: an introduction to more than 30 years of conflicts after 1990

2. Understanding Africa. The Maghreb countries and Western Africa

Core elements of the seminar: understand current challenges in North Western Africa: the focus of the seminar is on the Maghreb countries and the Sahel region.

History: relations between the Maghreb and Western African countries and their links to other regions (Arab world, Europe, the Americas)
Geography and demographics: understanding the fundamentals
Current challenges: migration, instability and insecurity
Who is who: understanding the main actors (internal and external) and their policies in North Western Africa.

3. European Politics and Policy: Understanding the European Union and their Member states in a changing international environment

Core elements of the seminar: understanding the European Union (EU) in International Relations.

European Integration: history of the European Union
Institutions of the European Union: how does the EU work?
External Relations and Neighbourhood Policy of the EU
EU and its member states in International Relations: understanding European policy making in Foreign Affairs
The main foreign policy priorities of the European Union
